With regard to the lifespan of developments, the source code of the application itself and also that of the application server used are public. When compared to commercial software, the fact it is public and open allows you to continue working with the product and evolving with it, even if the initial structures disappear.
For information, the French government recommended massive use of free software, and exclusive use wherever possible, as soon as 2000, in particular that of the Zope application server.
